"Investigação internacional foi liderada por José Xavier, do Instituto do Mar da Universidade de Coimbra.

As rápidas mudanças ambientais que se têm vindo a registar na região da Antárctida podem vir a afectar a sobrevivência de predadores de topo, conclui uma pesquisa internacional, liderada pelo investigador do Instituto do Mar da Universidade de Coimbra (UC), José Xavier, premiado pelo «Ciência Hoje» com um Seed of Science, em 2012."

Professor John Turner introduces the 2013 update to the SCAR Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment Report
Published on 18 April 2013 in the journal Polar Record, the Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) report provides an update on the scientific advances made since the last report in 2009. Important areas in which the science has rapidly advanced include the debate on whether the Antarctic ice sheet is growing or shrinking, and separating the signals of human-induced change from natural variations in the climate system.

A summary of the report in ten points is available from the SCAR website (www.scar.org)

A short video interview introducing the report by the editor Prof. John Turner is available at: http://youtu.be/ixChRFvBmdE.

An interagency working group chaired by Interior Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes released a report entitled “Managing for the Future in a Rapidly Changing Arctic” that calls for an integrated management strategy for the rapidly changing Arctic. The report highlights the need for a coordinated approach that uses the best available science to integrate cultural, environmental and economic factors in decision making about development and conservation. It can be downloaded at: http://www.doi.gov/news/upload/ArcticReport-03April2013PMsm.pdf.

The report is based on input from a wide range of Alaska stakeholders. In addition to recommending integrated management, the report recommends continuing high-level attention on the Arctic, strengthening state and tribal partnerships, encouraging more stakeholder engagement, undertaking more organized and inclusive scenario planning, and coordinating and potentially consolidating environmental reviews that are now being prepared by multiple agencies.

The report does not recommend new regulations or represent new policy decisions, but it does call for a review of the activities of over 20 federal agencies involved in the U.S. Arctic by the end of 2013 with an eye toward increased coordination and the elimination of duplication of efforts. Congress has entrusted the federal government with primary jurisdiction over nearly three quarters of the U.S. Arctic's land mass. In addition, the federal government has a special relationship with Alaska natives, including Alaskan tribes and native corporations.

The report to the President was led by the Interagency Working Group on Coordination of Domestic Energy Development and Permitting in Alaska, with active consultation and assistance from the National Ocean Council and the Arctic Research Commission. A full press release is available by clicking on the ‘Interagency Working Group Calls for Integrated…’ link at: http://www.doi.gov/news/pressreleases/index.cfm.

The SCAR Visiting Professor Scheme
The scheme is directed at mid- to late-career scientists and academics whose work contributes to the scientific objectives of SCAR, offering the opportunity for them to undertake a short-term visit (from one to four weeks) to another SCAR member country to provide training and mentoring. Awards will provide an international return flight and some contribution towards living expenses for the visiting period.

EUROFLEETS2 is a EU funded project providing scientists with 200 fully funded days of ship-time and 104 fully funded days of marine equipment to carry out ship-based research activities within any field of marine sciences.

- Polar and Subpolar Call Application deadline: 24th of May 2013

- Super-Integration Call Expression of interest open until the 15th of May 2013.

This Call seeks a truly cross cutting proposal which needs to mobilise a combination of EUROFLEETS Research Vessels (RVs) together with other appropriate scientific tools like nationals RVs, research planes or onshore infrastructures with their own EC or national funding. All EUROFLEETS RVs and equipment are available for this call.

The Expression of Interest is not binding. Logistically accepted pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal from the 14th of June till the 16th of September 2013.
