I would like to draw you attention to these two open position at CEAZA, Chile: *(1) Research Glaciologist*The Center for Advanced Research in Arid Zones (CEAZA) in Chile is seeking a glaciologist to occupy an open-term 100% research position in the field of glaciology. This role is that of a Principal Investigator within CEAZA. CEAZA is a scientific consortium, established in 2003 ( http://ceaza.cl), dedicated to studying the impact of climatic change and oscillations (e.g. ENSO) upon the hydrological cycle and the biological productivity in the arid zones of Northern-Central Chile. The glaciology group is focused on evaluating the water resources from the cryosphere as a contribution to integrated hydrological models for arid Andean basins and elsewhere in Chile. See full job offer at:http://www.ceaza.cl/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/GLACIOLOGIST-CRYOLIST_CEAZA_english.pdf*(2) Research Hydrologist*We invite applications for a 3-year renewable researcher position in Hydrology at the Center for Advanced Research in Arid Zones (CEAZA) in Chile. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects and develop his/her own research on the wide range of hydrological processes involved in the water cycle of the semiarid Northern-Central Chile, including snow and glacier melt, groundwater flow and water use by irrigation. He/She will work in close collaboration with researchers in Glaciology, Hydrogeology and Water Management, but may also develop innovative research projects with biologists and climate scientists.He/She will contribute to the development of a regional water observatory. This long-term project will generate data and therefore facilitate quantitative analysis of the interactions between regional water resources and climate. Lectures and workshopsLectures from Finnish and International participants, discussions and workshops will be held on the May 20 – 24, at the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi. Students participate in small group discussions on topics related to social work and conditions of globalization and divers social-cultural systems across the countries and continents. Field trips to Utsjoki and Helsinki First trip is to Utsjoki/Kevo (May 28-30, 2013), Finland’s northernmost municipality. We learn about social services to Lapland’s indigenous Sámi population and also about Sámi culture in Utsjoki. At Kevo we learn about the unique flora and fauna of Lapland while experiencing the pristine environment of the far north. Second trip we travel south to the Finland’s largest city Helsinki (June 1-5, 2013). In the capital of Finland we will participate in cultural activities and visit social service agencies. We seek a motivated student for a research project on : 'Winter extreme precipitation events in the Arctic' Within the research program on winter extreme events in the Arctic, the Ph.D. project aims at developing satellite remote sensing methods to detect rain-on-snow (ROS) events. The project will evaluate the occurrence and impact of those events on various climatic feedbacks as well as related uncertainties in regional climate models. Research activities include the treatment of passive microwave and multispectral remote sensing data, the use and validation of snow multilayered thermodynamic models. Field work is also planned at several locations where in-situ geophysical and radiometric measurements of snow will occur. The deployment and maintenance of a snow-dedicated meteorological tower is also planned. Those processes have significant impacts on surface energy balance, and their cumulated contributions to climate scenarios unknown. The research will provide improved knowledge on the climate scenarios uncertainties in a rapidly changing climate in the Arctic. The Ph.D. will be funded for 3 years, starting in the Fall 2013. Required: Extensive coding abilities (Matlab, Python...), GIS, field experience, team work. The Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (PCAS) is a fifteen week in-depth, multi-disciplinary programme that critically examines contemporary scientific, environmental, social and political debates focussed on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Antarctic field training and the experience of living and working in a polar environment are integral components of the programme. PCAS is aimed at: - students who have qualified for an approved degree (or equivalent) and wish to broaden their understanding of Antarctic related matters,
- professionals who are working or plan to work in positions or organisations where their contribution would be enhanced from the programme.
Jointly developed by the University of Canterbury and Antarctica New Zealand, this unique summer programme is the only programme in the world to take students to experience life in the Antarctic, at Scott Base (NZ's station on Ross Island) and at a field campsite on the Ross Ice Shelf. Northumbria University is inviting applications for University funded PhD studentships in cryospheric subjects (see table below). These studentships are available for uptake from September 2013. For further details and how to apply please visit: http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/researchstudentshipsIf you are considering an application you would be advised to speak to the supervisor for the project that interests you. We will provide advice on how to complete the application form. As these studentships are part of a University competition, we do not know how many studentships will be funded - the quality of the applicant will determine this. In addition to University funding one of these projects will be funded through a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Ph.D. studentship award. Funding for this project is for 3.5 years (42 months) and is subject to U.K. Natural Environment Research Council regulations. For this post a candidate must have "a relevant connection with the United Kingdom." Full details of eligibility are given at: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/postgrad/eligibility.aspand in the NERC Handbook pp.3-7: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/application/studentships/studentbook2012.pdfIf you would like further information please do get in touch.
